OK Barbering Training & License Requirements
Barbering programs in Oklahoma prepare students to be professional barbers through classroom learning and hands-on experience. Students take courses including men's haircutting and hair styling, barbershop sanitation and hygiene, facial hair grooming and men's skin care. Most schools also teach students about the history of barbering. During the hands-on part of training, Oklahoma barbering schools have students give real barbershop services to clients in the student salon. Students perfect their skills in cutting, styling and shaving under the supervision of licensed barber instructors. The State of Oklahoma requires students obtain at least 1500 hours of barber education at an accredited barber program. These programs must last at least nine months. Students also have the option to train as a barber's apprentice for 3000 hours over 18 months to three years. Once the apprenticeship or barbering education programs are completed, barber students must pass a written and a practical test in order to obtain their license. Effective November 1, 2013, barber licensure transfers to the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. The rules for licensure will not be changing.
Career Outlook for Professional Barbers in Oklahoma

Many barbershops in Oklahoma pride themselves on being "old-fashioned" barbershops, providing the full range of traditional men's hair and facial care. This might include hot towel shaves with a straight razor, haircuts, and nail care for men. Some barbers give face and neck massages, as well. Other Oklahoma barbershops cater to a clientele that wants an upscale and modern experience. These shops may resemble hair salons, and they might feature things like massages, scalp care and trendy haircuts. Licensed barbers in Oklahoma can work at established shops or run their own barbershop. With some additional training, they can also become barber instructors. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, barbers in Oklahoma earn an average annual salary of $25,340 not including tips. Barbers working in Oklahoma urban or metropolitan areas may have the opportunity to earn a higher wage and to attract better tips to supplement their income. Some barbers choose to take classes in cosmetology in order to be licensed to provide additional services. Barbers with multiple licenses have the best earning potential and the most career options in Oklahoma.
