OK Barbering Training & License Requirements

Barbering programs in Oklahoma prepare students to be professional barbers through classroom learning and hands-on experience. Students take courses including men's haircutting and hair styling, barbershop sanitation and hygiene, facial hair grooming and men's skin care. Most schools also teach students about the history of barbering. During the hands-on part of training, Oklahoma barbering schools have students give real barbershop services to clients in the student salon. Students perfect their skills in cutting, styling and shaving under the supervision of licensed barber instructors. The State of Oklahoma requires students obtain at least 1500 hours of barber education at an accredited barber program. These programs must last at least nine months. Students also have the option to train as a barber's apprentice for 3000 hours over 18 months to three years. Once the apprenticeship or barbering education programs are completed, barber students must pass a written and a practical test in order to obtain their license. Effective November 1, 2013, barber licensure transfers to the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. The rules for licensure will not be changing.
