LA Barbering Training & License Requirements

They do not accept apprenticeship hours in lieu of classroom study and hands on practice at a barbering program. Students must earn at least 1,500 hours of instruction, including lectures and student barbering practice, to graduate from a program. The Board then requires students pass written and practical exams before the initial barber license is approved.

Course topics in barbering school may include the history of barbering, shop and tool sanitation, care of straight razors, haircutting for men and women, mustache and beard care, facial skin treatments, hair coloring, men's hairpieces and barbershop business and marketing skills. Licensed barbers may also perform singeing, dyeing, permanently waving or straightening hair. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports Louisiana barbers earn an average salary of $19,120 before tips. Barbers in larger cities with loyal client lists often earn significantly more. The number of barbers should grow by 14 percent by 2020, so this is a good time to enter the profession. Barbers style and cut hair for men and women, give shaves and beard trims, and offer facials and skin care. Louisiana barbers must keep their equipment sanitary at all times.
