TX Barbering Training & License Requirements

Barbering programs in Texas offer students to be creative and do the men's hair care work they desire. The field of barbering offers many great opportunities for Texans interested in style and men's appearance. Barbering is one of America's most loved traditions, with barbershops an icon of the American city. Patrons visit Texas barbershops for great haircuts, straight-razor shaves and good conversation. More barbers also offer hairstyling and specialty services as well as basic haircuts for women. Texas barbering programs teach students the fundamentals of barbering and prepare students to pass the licensing exams required by the state. Some of the required education is provided in the classroom, but a great deal of time is devoted to hands-on haircutting practice in student clinics.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation requires students attend a licensed and accredited barbering program for at least 1500 hours of instruction and hands-on practice. Texas does not have an option for students to work as apprentice barbers in lieu of attending classes. Barbering students take written and practical examinations to receive their licenses after completing their required education. Tests are available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. The exams will cover topics addressed in barbering programs, including haircutting and styling, men's facial hair care, facial shaves, coloring hair, applying waves or straightening treatments, facial skin care, manicuring skills, care of hairpieces and toupees, and performing hair weaves and braids.

Career Outlook for Professional Barbers in Texas

The city ranks as the fourth-highest paying metropolitan area, with salaries averaging $37,660 per year before tips.
