MS Barbering Training & License Requirements

Barbering is the study of caring for men's hair and skin, hairstyling, shaving and other men's pampering services. If you are interested in entering this traditional and respected profession in Mississippi, you must attend an accredited barbering school. You can learn to provide quality haircuts, shaves, mustache and beard trims and other barbering services. Barbering programs in Mississippi require residents to be at least age seventeen and to have a high school education or the equivalent. State law requires students complete 1500 hours of training in order to take the tests for an initial barber's license. Barbers need an additional 1516 hours of training to apply for a Master Barber's License. Mississippi barbering schools teach infection control, workplace and barber tool sanitation, professional ethics, and the state laws regulating barbers. Students should expect to learn about the traditional tools of barbering, hair cutting and clipping techniques, straightening and curling methods, shaving, trimming beards and mustaches, shaving faces, hair coloring and the use of hair styling products and preparations. The can also learn about caring for men's skin and the products required for this.

Students must demonstrate proper use of barbering equipment and techniques during the state practical exam. They show their academic and theoretical knowledge of the profession on the written exam. After both exams are passed, the candidate obtains their license as a Mississippi barber by the Mississippi Board of Cosmetology. Most successful barbers stay up-to-date on modern hairstyling trends by taking continuing education classes after getting their licenses. The barbering profession is expected to grow 14 percent by 2020 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Career Outlook for Professional Barbers in Mississippi

Most barbers begin their careers working in barbershops owned by others. Others work in their own shops, or they provide services on military bases or in retirement homes. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported the annual average salary for barbers and hair stylists in Mississippi was $28,230 before tips and sales bonuses. The city of Pascagoula has the eighth highest pay for barbers and hairdressers in the nation, with an annual average salary of $35,070.
