Cosmetology Schools in Mississippi
Cosmetology schools in Mississippi offer students an entryway into the world of potential success and achievement in the personal care services industry. They offer a variety of coursework, all required by the state to help students prepare to take the state licensing exam. While attending one of the many cosmetology schools in Mississippi, you’ll be trained in hair styling, pedicuring, manicuring, scalp treatment and skin care. You’ll also take courses in bacteriology, sterilization and sanitation, perming, hair design, perming and shampooing.
The Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology requires that a minimum number of training hours be provided by state-approved schools. For cosmetology, 1,550 hours are required. For future estheticians, 600 hours are mandated; for nail technicians, the state requires 350 hours of training.
Once you’ve successfully completed your training at one of the many beauty schools in Mississippi, you’ll be able to take the licensing exam and, if passed, you can then practice in your chosen occupation. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics(BLS) reports that cosmetologists, hairdressers and hairstylists in Mississippi earn an average annual wage of $25,640, while those who practice for a number of years and excel in their specialty earn $43,070—much higher than the state’s average individual income of $31,186. The average hourly wage for these professionals is $12.33. And the BLS predicts a bright future for the industry: more than 200,000 positions are expected to be added nationwide between 2010 and 2020.
