Iowa: The Hawkeye State

If you are interested in getting your Iowa cosmetology license or other beauty license, below is all the information you need to know about getting licensed in the Hawkeye State!

Licenses Available:
Cosmetologist

Electrologist
Esthetician
Manicurist and Nail Technologist

Required Hours:
Cosmetologist : 2100 Hours
Electrologist: 425 Hours
Esthetitian: 600 Hours
Manicurist: 40 Hours + Perform 25 Manicures
Nail Technologist: 325 Hours

License Requirements:
Must have a high school diploma or GED.
Must show proof of graduation from cosmetology school.

Reciprocity:
Extended to all States, provided that the requirements of that State are equal to or greater than Iowa's. An Iowa Law exam is also mandatory.

Renewal:
Half of the cosmetology licenses in Iowa expire on March 31 of even-numbered years, and the other half expire on March 31 of odd-numbered years. In order to renew your license in Iowa, you must provide the following to the IA cosmetology board:
- Renewal form
- Fee
- Proof of continuing education hours
