Virginia Nail Training Requirements

Manicuring or nail technology is growing as a career faster than most other professions. It is estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) that the field of nail technology will grow by about 18% by 2020. To become a nail tech in Virginia, a student must complete a 275 hour approved training program. The option for a 2000-hour apprenticeship was also added in a September 2011 law update. After training, students take the national Nail Tech written and practical exams. The Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology awards the nail tech license once the exams have been completed and passed

In Virginia, many nail techs work in the tourism industry, including high-end hotels and resorts. Near Washington D.C. there are many opportunities for boutique and designer nail shops. Professional spas and salons are frequent job locations for nail techs. Virginia allows manicurists to have nail boutiques in their homes, or to own and operate mobile nail care salons. According to the BLS, nail techs earn an annual mean salary of $22,830 (before tips) in Virginia statewide. Salaries may be significantly higher in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area
