The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics(BLS) predicts the demand for professionals in the personal care industry to increase over the next several years. All Oregon cosmetologists must graduate from an accredited beauty school. The school does not have to be located in Oregon, but the state offers many schools to choose from. Cosmetology schools students learn different techniques in hair cutting, hair color, instruction on performing manicures, pedicures and massage and the mandatory 150 hours in proper safety and infection training.

Once you have graduated from an accredited program, you will have to take and pass the cosmetology exam. The exam covers all aspects of beauty school -- a written exam which covers safety and infection procedures, as well as other cosmetology concepts and a clinical exam which measures technique in hair cutting and coloring, completion of a manicure or pedicure and test of safety and infection practices. Upon successful completion of the exam, graduates will receive their cosmetology license and be allowed to work in the state or Oregon.

Oregon cosmetologists are required to keep their license current by taking courses and participating in cosmetology and beauty shows. This ensures the cosmetologist's skill remain up-to-date.
