MT Barbering Training & License Requirements

Attend a Montana barbering school and begin a career focusing on helping clients stay stylish and well groomed with haircuts, hair styling, facial hair trimming and shaving, and skin care for the rugged outdoorsman. The field of barbering is growing and is expected to grow about 14 percent larger by 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many barbershops in Montana have unique and iconic décor, reflecting the colorful history of the state and the shop owners.

While attending a barbering program in Montana, students learn how to do clipper cuts, and how to cut and style men's hair. They learn to do traditional straight razor shaves along with cutting and trimming mustaches and beards. Throughout the barbering program, students learn the state regulations governing barbering in Montana, along with barbershop safety and sanitation requirements. Students learn basic and advanced techniques for coloring and styling men's hair. Montana barbering programs teach students about scalp treatments as well as fitting and adjusting toupees and hairpieces. Many barber schools teach skills for business management and marketing yourself as a barber. Many graduates of Montana barbering programs choose to open their own barbershops.

The Montana Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists requires barbering program students to have at least a high school education or the equivalent of one to be eligible to take the barber licensing exam. Students must complete an approved Montana barbering program consisting of at least 1,500 hours of training. Following completion of the classroom training, graduates must take written and practical barbering exams before the Board. If they pass the tests, they receive their first barber's license for Montana.
