WY Barbering Training & License Requirements

Barbering programs in Wyoming train creative and motivated students to provide a full range of men's hair, face and skin care in this wild and rugged state. Barber schools teach students to cut and style men's hair, shave faces, perform men's facial treatments, fit and maintain hairpieces, and to groom men's facial hair. Wyoming barbering programs also teach students customer service and business management skills to improve their success in the professional world of barbering. Professional barbers may also be asked to give advice to clients about specific hair or skin care products and routines. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the field of barbering and men's hair care will grow 14 percent by 2020.

The Board of Barbering in Wyoming requires students be at least 16 years old to begin a course of study to become a barber. Barbering students complete at least 1000 hours of classroom training or one year as an apprentice barber. The Board can provide specific information about the required content of the training. Graduates of accredited barbering programs or apprenticeships in Wyoming must pass written and practical exams covering the information they have learned. Once all the classroom and testing requirements have been met, the barber receives an initial one-year barber's license. Barbers can also choose to attend 2000 hours of cosmetology school, which includes barber training. These barbers can take the cosmetologist exams and become licensed in both fields. This increases their job prospects, versatility, and salary outlook.
