For students looking to attend one of the many cosmetology schools in Maine, the options are plentiful. And Maine schools are well qualified to teach the material necessary for successful careers. In addition to providing training in areas such as hair design, hair cutting, shampooing, manicures and pedicures, scalp treatment, hair coloring and skin care, cosmetology schools in Maine also provide training in personal development, time management and customer service. All these areas are taught in order to help prepare students to take the state’s licensing exam.

But these state-approved schools not only teach the required material; they also meet the state’s requirements for number of training hours. For example, cosmetologists must complete 1,500 hours of training, while estheticians must complete 600 hours and manicurists are required to complete 600 hours. A benefit the state offers is its acceptance of licenses from other states; however, students should contact the Maine Board of Cosmetology for more information.

For those students who successfully complete the required training and pass the state licensing exam, the opportunities for good-paying jobs are positive. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), cosmetologists, hairdressers and hairstylists in Maine earn an average hourly wage of $13.10—higher than the national average for the same professions of $12.72. The average annual compensation in Maine is $27,260, while personal care professionals who excel in their chosen specialty make nearly $43,000 per year—much higher than the average Maine income of $37,300.
