In order to get a state license for cosmetology and hairstyling, professionals need to have completed 1,200 hours of study. Manicurists need to complete 300 hours of course work, and skin care specialists need 600 hours of course instruction at an accredited New Jersey beauty school.

After a cosmetologist has earned their New Jersey license, they are qualified to land a high-paying job in the industry. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the demand for Jersey cosmetologists will increase 16 percent in the next decade. They also report the national average salary for a cosmetologist is $26,460. New Jersey professionals can expect their salaries to be higher than the national average because the state cosmetologists earn an average of $28,830. The particular salary varies according to the city where a person works.
