MA Barbering Training & License Requirements
Barbering students in Massachusetts begin with an enthusiasm for men's hair care and styling. They are ready to participate in a career expected to grow by approximately 14 percent by 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Massachusetts barbering schools teach the fundamentals of men's hair and skin care, and the skills needed to help clients always look their best. By the time barbering program students graduate, they will be very familiar with the requirements and skills needed for licensure in Massachusetts.
The Massachusetts Board of Cosmetology regulates licensing of barbers in the Commonwealth. Students must be 16 years old to enroll in barbering school. They complete at least 1000 hours of professional training in a Massachusetts barbering school over at least six months. After classroom training, students take both written and practical exams to receive their initial licenses. The initial license is valid for one year. Later licenses need to be renewed every two years.
Classes in Massachusetts barber schools include techniques for clipper cutting, hair design and hair cutting, highlighting and coloring men's hair, shaving and caring for men's facial hair, skin care and nail care for men. Many barbering programs in Massachusetts also teach students about state laws and regulations governing the practice of barbering.
