New Jersey Cosmetology Licensing Requirements

Some people think that New Jersey's only claim to fame is Hoboken, birthplace of Ol' Blue Eyes. But, there are the Nets and the Sopranos.

Licenses Available: Cosmetologist, Hairstylist, Electrologist, Skin Care Specialist, Manicurist

Required Hours:
Cosmetologist-Hairstylist: 1200 Hours
Electrologist: 600 Hours
Manicurist: 300 Hours
Skin Care Specialist: 600 Hours

Minimum Requirements: 17 years of age. High School diploma or G.E.D.

Reciprocity: 1,200 hours of instruction at a school of cosmetology and hairstyling, beauty culture or barbering licensed in another state or a foreign country which, in the opinion of the Board, offers curricula which is substantially similar to that offered at licensed schools within the State, and pass an examination conducted by the Board.
