New Jersey: The Garden State

If you are interested in getting your New Jersey cosmetology lilcense or other beauty license, below is all the information you need to know about getting licensed in the Garden State!

Licenses Available:
Cosmetologist

Hairstylist
Electrologist
Skin Care Specialist
Manicurist

Required Hours:
Cosmetologist/Hairstylist: 1200 Beauty School Hours
Electrologist: 600 Electrolysis Training Hours
Manicurist: 300 Nail School Hours
Skin Care Specialist: 600 Esthetician School Hours

License Requirements:
Must be at least 17 years of age.
Must have high School diploma or G.E.D.

Reciprocity:
New Jersey grants reciprocity to applicants with 1,200 hours of instruction at a school of cosmetology and hairstyling, beauty culture or barbering licensed in another state or a foreign country which, in the opinion of the Board, offers curricula which is substantially similar to that offered at licensed schools within the State, and pass an examination conducted by the Board. 

Renewal:
New Jersey cosmetology licenses are valid for two years. Continuing education is not required at this time for renewal. To renew your license in New Jersey the following is due to the NJ cosmetology board:
