California: The Golden State

If you are interested in getting your California cosmetology license or other beauty license, below is all the information you need to know about getting licensed in the Golden State!

Licenses Available:
Cosmetologist
Esthetician
Manicurist
Barber
Electrologist

Required Hours:
Cosmetologist: 1600 Cosmetology School Hours
Barber: 1500 Barber School Hours
Electrologist: 600 Electrolysis Hours (Or 2-Year Apprenticeship)
Esthetician: 600 Esthetician School Hours
Manicurist: 400 Nail School Hours

License Requirements:
Must be at least 17 years of age.
Must have at least 10th grade education or quivalent.
Electrologist applicants must have at least 12th grade education or equivalent.

Reciprocity:
The CA cosmetology board grants reciprocity without examination to out-of-state applicants if the following are submitted: application, fees, proof of current license that has been active for three of the last five years, during which the applicant must not have been subject to disciplinary action or criminal conviction.

Renewal:
Cosmetology licenses in California are valid for two years. Licensees may renew online if license is delinquent by no more than 2 years. Five years after expiration without renewing, the license is no loner considered valid. To renew your California cosmetology license, the following items are required at the California Board of Cosmetology:

- Fee
