PA Makeup Artist Training & License Requirements

With an education from a makeup artistry program in Pennsylvania, you can become qualified to work as a professional makeup artist. Cosmetologists attend a beauty school program for 1250 hours and estheticians attend 300 hours of school. Pennsylvania beauty students take written and practical Board exams after graduation. When those exams are passed, they receive their license from the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology. Pennsylvania makeup artistry programs teach the fundamentals of beauty, makeup and color theory. Makeup artists learn about lighting, contouring faces and about creating special effects for the stage and film. They learn to use the tools and techniques of the industry.

Beauty pros statewide earn an annual average salary of $25,680. The east-central region of Pennsylvania has the third-highest number of cosmetologists and estheticians of any non-metropolitan area in the United States.

Makeup artists working in the world of theatrical and performing arts earn an average annual salary of $55,660. Pennsylvania ranks fifth for employment numbers in the seven states where the BLS tracks this specialty. It is also the fourth highest-paying state among the seven for performing arts makeup artists.
