OH Barbering Training & License Requirements

Ohio barbering school students must be 16 years old with at least a 10th grade education to enroll in a barbering program. The State of Ohio requires attending a program of at least 1800 hours of classroom and hands-on barbering experience. Barbering students learn to provide quality hair styling for men, along with the skills needed to maintain a clean shop and hygienic equipment. Most Ohio barbering programs teach students basic business and customer service skills along with ethics and the barbering laws of the state.

In barbering school, students also learn about men's hair coloring, texturizing services like chemical curls and relaxers, hair and scalp conditioning, and dandruff and dermatitis care. After completion of barbering school, students take written and practical board exams. Both tests are only available in English. Once all the licensing requirements are met, the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology issues the initial barber's license which is valid for two years. Barbers in Ohio must complete eight hours of continuing education for license renewals.

Career Outlook for Professional Barbers in Ohio

Licensed Ohio barbers earn an annual average salary of $26,280 before tips, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Barbers in larger cities such as Cleveland may earn slightly more per year. Licensed barbers may work in barber shops or hair salons providing hair care and skin care services to clients. Some barbers take courses in cosmetology as well as barbering. This allows them to become licensed in both fields, broadening their career options. Barbers might choose to open their own shops or to teach at a barbering program, too. The barbering industry is predicted to grow 14 percent by 2020, according to the BLS.
