South Dakota: The Coyote State

Licenses Available:
Cosmetologist

Esthetician
Nail Technician

Required Hours:
Cosmetology: 2100 Beauty School Hours
Esthetician: 750 Esthetics School Hours
Nail Technician: 400 Nail School Hours

License Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.

Reciprocity:
Applicants must have current license from another state with equal or greater licensing requirements. Work experience may be considered for additional hours. Applicant must pass NIC Theory and Practical examinations.

Renewal:
South Dakota cosmetology licenses are renewable annually. Continuing education hours are required for licensees who wish to perform microdermabrasion services or use electric files, as well as cosmetology teachers. To renew your license in South Dakota, the following are required by the SD cosmetology board:
- Renewal form
- Fee
- Proof of continuing education hours (electric file, microdermabrasion, teachers only)
