In addition to being one of the United States' most beautiful states to live in, beauty school graduates can enjoy some of the top salaries anywhere in the rest of the USA. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)Hawaii ranks second in the nation for hairdressers and hairstylists with an average annual salary of $34,670.

While attending one of the many beauty schools in Hawaii, you can expect to learn all the basics such as techniques for cutting, dying and styling hair for specific clients; nail artistry; basic skin care and makeup; sales and marketing as appropriate for your chosen line of study. Your chosen school will be sure to include in your curriculum all the prerequisites that need to be met for Hawaii's rigorous licensing requirements. Hawaii's licensing requirements include: cosmetologist - 1800 hours education, 3600 hours apprenticeship; barbering - 1500 hours education; hairdresser - 1250 hours education, 2500 hours apprenticeship; esthetician - 600 hours education, 1100 hours apprenticeship; nail technician - 350 hours education, 700 hours apprenticeship.

The licensing exam is taken after completion of training, and is issued by the Hawaii State Board of Cosmetology. Once you have passed the exam and have your license, you can work in the state of Hawaii as a beautician. However, it is recommended by the board that in order to stay on top of your line of work, you continue your education through conventions, private retreats, and continuing practice and application of your newly honed skills.
